Why is it that the rich get richer and the poor stay poor?
The rich get richer and the poor stay poor because of the way the rich are abusing an already flawed economic system. The world is increasingly become a society of the "haves" and the "have nots". The resource war has kept people in charge of resources on top, and the resource stricken in poverty. Economic inequality is escalating and people are having more difficulty moving up the economic ladder. There are multiple conspiracy theories about the powers that be, making us question the legitimacy of organizations like the IMF and World Bank that are supposedly established for the purpose of promoting welfare and serving these impoverished people.
Jamaica for example, is being thrusted by these corporations further into poverty by being granted debts they can't afford to repay.

Geography Questions
How does the devastation brought from Typhoon Haiyan make you feel?
Initially, it occurred to me that the typhoon had not hit Metro Manila as hard as it was expected, and so i found comfort in knowing the highly congested areas were not affected too badly. However, i soon came across the damage of the typhoon in more southern provinces, and any hint of optimism was destroyed. I have household help at home that asked me to help them and check on their province via the internet. Their families were perfectly fine health-wise, thankfully. However, the destruction brought about by Haiyan did so much more than take lives. It destroyed livelihoods.
How should people prepare for and respond to disasters like Typhoon Haiyan?
Firstly, I feel like people are given the opportunity to foresee these natural calamities, and therefore a large portion of government expenditure needs to be dedicated to disaster relief. We need to be able to evacuate and recover--a process that Filipinos are no strangers to.
Why do people live in vulnerable areas?
People live in these vulnerable areas simply because there is no alternative. They do not have the resources to relocate, and they have already developed an emotional connection to the area and to the community.
